Indian Country

Kathleen Williams released her detailed priorities for Montana’s Indian Country in her second policy whitepaper. As Montana’s lone voice in Congress, Kathleen will protect the sovereign-to-sovereign relationship between Tribal governments and the Federal government and will work to ensure programs for Indian Country are run efficiently, effectively, and have the resources to fulfill their missions.

“Tribal Nations in Montana are rich in culture and history. The proud Native people I’ve met in reservation and urban communities share a strong sense of family and being there for one another,” said Williams. “To preserve these values and history, we must respect tribal sovereignty and ensure federal policy incorporates tribal interests. Too often, our government makes misguided policy on behalf of our Native communities without meaningful consultation.”

“Kathleen’s taken time to listen to Indian country and hear their ideas and concerns. Her respect for our cultural values is obvious from her priorities. That understanding will make her a strong advocate for Indian country in Congress.”Donavon Hawk, enrolled member of the Crow Nation.
